Even the Dalai Lama needs a gun… April 17, 2004
Posted by Owen in : Stuff... , trackbackYesterday, around 4 PM, Bryan was standing near the UCI Power Plant, across from the Bren Events Center, with 20 other people waiting for a tour of the plant. The Dalai Lama was scheduled to speak at 4:30 and the road they were standing next to was closed to traffic. Around 4:15 a group of 5 or 6 vehicles drive by. As they pass, Bryan notices that each car has 3 people pointing machine guns (really!) at them… this was the Dalai Lama and his entourage. I guess there was an assassination attempt on him recently, so he has to travel carefully.
There was no noticeable police presence during the speech yesterday that I noticed, but the ushers were unusually buff.
